Each spring, I look forward to the priest assignments list. My friends and I text each other as soon as we see it. I thought we were an odd crew of Catholics — until I started working at Northwest Catholic. Then I found out many of you devour that information, too. It’s one of the most-read stories each year on NWCatholic.org.

I’ve also learned working here that a lot of prayer and consideration go into those assignments. We asked Father Gary Zender, the archdiocese’s vicar for clergy, to shed light on how those decisions are made. I am grateful for his insights as both a member of the Priest Personnel Board and as a pastor. Read the Q&A here.

In this issue, you’ll also meet two powerhouses: Van Phan and St. Frances Xavier Cabrini. Both women — immigrants, a century apart — have cared for the poor and sick in our region. I am inspired by their faith and fortitude. I hope you are too.

God bless.
